accepted Thursday as ArtFest2012's 50th artist. All space for the fifth annual
arts and music festival hosted by Riverdale Park Arts Council has been sold.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style><br></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-autospace:none"><span style>Prendable, who uses oil paints to capture
landscapes and portraits, is from Riverdale Park. In 1981, Gerald King, the
renowned Riverdale Park realism painter, was his art instructor at Prince
George's Community College in Largo.</span><span style></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-autospace:none"><span style> </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-autospace:none"><span style>"He is a very difficult teacher. He was
very tough and very critical. If you are going to be an art major, you'd better
be able to take criticism. It was very hard and I learned a lot,"
Prendable said. "Gerald King is an excellent teacher. He pushed his
students -- he was tough -- but he made you a better artist."</span><span style></span></p>

master. "It wasn't unusual for him to assign you 50 drawings on a Monday
and expect to see them when class met on Wednesday. Like that is
possible!" </span><span style></span></p>

layout he'd like to be on Sunday, Prendable quickly quipped, "No where
near Gerald!" </span><span style></span></p>

quite happy to hear he’ll be placed right next to his mentor. King’s wife, Yoko
King, will be on the other side of the instructor exhibiting and selling
authentic Japanese clothing and jewelry.</span><span style></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-autospace:none"><span style>Nearby, there will be an alumni tent of
sorts. Several of King’s students have reserved space. Margaret Tintle, who has
been studying with King for nearly 20 years at his home studio, <i>Atelier
Royal,</i> and currently takes the daytime painting class, will offer some of
her works for display and sale. "Gerald is a good teacher, and
doesn't bug you,” she says. “He gives you general guidance to start  [an
artwork] and encourages each person to work on their own, and ask for help as
needed. He is not a lecturer and does not provide step-by-step instruction.
Instead, he encourages each student to develop their own talent, and
occasionally will demonstrate techniques or approaches pertaining to each
student's work."</span><span style></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-autospace:none"><span style>Another King student, Harriet Tarver, “will
be exhibiting at least two pieces, and both may be for sale," says fellow
student Jana Over of Hyattsville. Over has reserved ArtsFest space for several
King protégées and is looking forward to ArtsFest2012 but she probably
won't have anything for </span>sale. "Neither of my two pieces will be
for sale" but she acknowledges, "I'm too thrilled at finally
producing half-way decent work!"</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-autospace:none"><span style>A “Literary Corner” featuring a slew of local authors and their signed books
will debut at ArtsFest2012. Local authors Don Lynch, <span style="color:#1a1a1a">Tom
Alderson and Melissa Avery’s “Riverdale Park,” part of the “Images of America”
series, will be available along with nearly a dozen other books and authors. </span></span></p>

along with a noon-time performance by <span style="color:#1a1a1a">Lyrikal </span><span style>Storm, Parkdale Senior High’s poet
performers, all appearing in the Douglas Development Little Theater. Also in
the Little Theater at 2 pm and 4 pm will be Active Cultures’ offering of
“Sportaculture IV,” five new short plays about local sports. </span></span></p>

inspirational soul singer Temika Moore, blues vocals from the Sheryl Sears
trio, jazz-pop by Brulee and Oldies Rock, R&B from Wayne Brown & 2^nd
Conspiracy. Members of the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation will also
perform all day from the South Stage. </span></p>
