<br>Carole Bernard<br><br>Gateway CDC | (301) 864-3860<br><br><a href="mailto:ExecDirector@gatewaycdc.org">ExecDirector@gatewaycdc.org</a><br><br> <br><br><b>Tuesday, June 4, 2013—</b> Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) presented the <a href="http://mygatewayarts.org">Prince George’s County Gateway Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District</a> with the 2013 Award for Outstanding Achievement, along with Silver Spring’s A&E District. The Gateway Arts District Management Team, represented by Stuart Eisenberg and Carole Bernard, Executive Directors of the Hyattsville and Gateway Community Development Corporations (respectively), accepted the Award at the Annual A&E District Managers Meeting at the Creative Alliance at The Patterson, in Baltimore’s Highlandtown Arts District.<br>
<br>The Award recognizes the collective growth of enhanced public facilities, new restaurants, incoming housing, and increasing tenancies along the Route One Corridor. The Gateway Arts District’s growth in public art, outreach, promotional initiatives and the expanded web presence of MyGatewayArts.org served to bring greater attention in the Washington, D.C., metro region. The Art Lives Here Initiative, an Arts District-wide partnership led by Joe’s Movement Emporium, is also building local momentum. Each of these assets enhances communal character that expands the market base for the Arts District’s retail, studios and dining.<br>
<br>The Gateway Arts District of Prince George’s County offers the richness and diversity of the metropolitan region, but retains at its core the heart of the four small towns: Mount Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood, and Hyattsville. “The hard work of this vibrant community’s residents, businesses, and stakeholders truly serves as another spotlight for the arts in Prince George’s County,” exclaims Penny Mendoza, Chief of Staff for District 2 Councilman Will A. Campos. The spotlight is truly a wide array: the rejuvenated corridor includes a mix of new buildings and renovated structures knitted together with shared architectural features, attractive landscaping, public art, street trees and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks. Councilman Campos observes, “Whether you’re here for a gallery reception, you’re dining after work, or coming to a morning recital on the weekend, the Gateway Arts District is both a comfortable place to call home and a growing arts destination.” The Management Team thanks our 22nd and 47th District Representatives and Mayors for their support.<br>
<br>The Gateway Arts District is part of the Maryland A&E District Program, which provides tax incentives for Maryland localities to cultivate these special zones that harness the powers of each area’s unique cultural resources. The Gateway Arts & Entertainment District became the first of its kind in Maryland when the Program was created in 2001; which has grown to include 20 districts across the state. A&E Districts are initially designated for a ten-year period, and then must competitively apply for re-designation every 10 years thereafter. The Gateway Arts District was re-certified in the summer of 2011.<br>
