I was speaking on my personal experiences, which happen to be negative. I was also speaking on my experiences with getting opinions from some people,which also happens to be negative. I live across from the school so I am only speaking on the negative occurrences that I have encountered. Not every child in that school cusses and is disrespectful. Unfortunately, there are quite a few that are and those are the students I am referring to. I have not had any encounters with other students or the CPA program. <br>
Im simply venting my concerns and frustrations about these issues that are a constant occurrence and asking advice from our neighbors to see what can be done, if anything. <br>
As I said, I have contacted the school and the police many times. Not much of a response. The school says there is not much they can do once school is over and the kids are not on the school property. Police can try to be there at dismissal,but if they get a call,they have to go (which I understand).<br>
Today I spoke with Mr. Cox at the school, he said "maybe they can try to make an announcement to the kids during lunch about behaving".<br>
I may have to send my child there "out of necessity", which is the main reason why Im trying to see if anything can be done. At this point, I do not feel that Hyatts Middle is the safest place for him to be. It is quite sad that there are these things going on so often. If it was a rare occurence, I probably would not say anything.<br>

There are some really great teachers there and my daughter gained a lot from the CPA program. <br clear="none"><br clear="none">I'm not trying to argue about what you are experiencing -- I'm sure my daughter would agree with you about some of the kids wholeheartedly! And I'm sure you don't meant to imply that my kid and many of the the other great HMS kids, CPA or non-CPA, are ALL fighting and cussing. <br clear="none"><br clear="none"></div>
<div class="ecxgmail_default" style="FONT-SIZE:small;">But please let's address this serious issue you have brought up without disparaging the school as a whole (and or we parents who by choice or necessity send our kids to HMS) The HMS kids who are not misbehaving, who are working hard and playing by the rules -- they deserve to be recognized and praised at least as much as those kids who misbehave should be held accountable, right?<br clear="none"><br clear="none"></div>

I have talked to several people: teachers, administrators, police officers, parents of the students....I have not really heard any positive comments about the school as a whole (there were a very few positive comments about the Performing Arts Program and those were not that enthusiastic) and that is sad. I have been told numerous times, "if you send your son there, make sure he is in the CPA program". Ok, what about the whole school? The kids in the CPA program are not completely separate. They still have classes/lunch with all the other kids. The kids should feel happy and safe in the school, not just
if they are semi secluded in that program.</span></div>

<div>Police presence might stop the fighting at that location but the kids involved will just move to another location. Their parents might even be teaching them to fight. These issues are family and community issues, we should be offering recreation programs that suit their needs, jobs that pay more than minimum wage for their parents, not paying more cops to give these kids records and create career criminal activity. If they don't respond then you can start notching it up. <br clear="none"><br clear="none">The only power you have in this situation is the number of parents you can get to sign. <div>I know I have emailed about this before. We have lived across from Hyattsville Middle for 5 years. We have had to call the police and break up fights many times over the last 5 years. I have contacted the school. I have contacted Hyattsville Police. I have sent emails here, hoping that if your children attend Hyattsville Middle, you will talk to them. </div>
<div>Just yesterday, I called the police because of a fight at the corner of 42nd and Oglethorpe. The police did not arrive quickly enough so another woman and I were yelling at the kids to break it up. Then the police car came and kids started dispersing. The kids gather down at Poncho's, they block the parking lot, they block the door, they have stood in front of my car so I could not move. They cuss at you. They "try" to be intimidating. I, personally, am not intimidated and am very quick to put them in their place. Something needs to be done. Suggestions? I cannot imagine having to send my child there next year.</div>
