Hi all,

As a long time resident, 1970, I can say that the Riverdale Park Police Dept. has always been the best. Chief Morris is always available to residents. His ward walks are fun and informative. I am always surprised that more residents don't take advantage. You don't have to have a problem to engage with the police of Riverdale Park. The RP Police are always at town events and available. With that kind of interaction with the community I wonder why you would need special meetings. In Riverdale Park, special meetings occur every day of the week! The only reason I would see for a special meeting would be to discuss how we can offer to train other police depts. in other parts of the country to follow the example of Riverdale Park.

Hi Mary (& TownTalk),

As Alison Spain said in her note, I think that our Police Department works to engage with the community in a lot of ways - National Night Out, the Public Safety walks that happen several times a year (each covers one ward), and the "Five-Oh" program that encourages officers to directly engage with residents in a more social way (not in an information-gathering or enforcement context).

All of that being said, there's always room for improvement, and I'm positive that Chief Morris is open to ideas on how to do that.

There is a Town Council work session this evening (8 pm at 5008 Queensbury Road), and I encourage you to attend and speak to us about your concerns (next Tuesday is a legislative session, same time and place, where you are welcome to speak as well). Chief Morris is almost certain to be at both meetings, and Lt. Colonel Timmons will be there in his place if for some reason he is unavailable. Whether or not you can make it, I will let both Chief Morris, Mayor Archer, and Public Safety Committee Chair David Lingua know about your thoughts and ideas.

I hope to meet you tonight, but will let you know what feedback I get whether or not that happens!

Best regards,

I'm new to town talk, though I've lived in RP for three years now!
I'm wondering if there are any community events, meetings, etc planned
in the aftermath of the shooting death of Mike Brown in Ferguson, MO,
or if people would be interested in organizing one. I would like to
see our town have a discussion about police and resident relations,
how to build a stronger community across possible racial divides, and
how to be respectful of one another. Some of these may sound vague,
and I'm not exactly sure how to go about organizing something like
this, but this is too important of an issue affecting our whole
country to let the opportunity of community discussion and action pass
us by.

I would greatly appreciate people's thoughts, and I hope to have some
constructive conversations about this.

In community,

Mary, on Somerset Rd.
