Students and animals urgently need your help in Maryland.<br><br>
Lawmakers in the state, led by Sen. Ronald N. Young, have introduced a bill that would give students the right to opt out of cruel animal dissection exercises in favor of humane non-animal teaching methods such as virtual dissection. This compassionate and lifesaving bill, <a href="http://www2.peta.org/site/R?i=RWDd7DPOx5A-xpZdpfViIw">S.B. 901</a>, is being considered now and <strong>will be discussed during a public hearing on Wednesday, March 9</strong>.<br><br>
There are <strong>two key ways</strong> that you can help animals and students in Maryland:</p><ul><li style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><strong>Speak out in favor of the bill</strong> at the Health and Environmental Affairs Committee public hearing on S.B. 901 on Wednesday March 9, at 1 p.m. at the <a href="http://www2.peta.org/site/R?i=GBWaMZxe4khx2JbJWg94_g">Miller Senate Office Building, 2 West Wing, 11 Bladen St., Annapolis, MD 21401</a>. </li><li style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><strong>Submit a brief, polite written statement in support of S.B. 901</strong> directly to Sen. Young's office via e-mail at <a href="mailto:Ronald.Young@senate.state.md.us">Ronald.Young@senate.state.md.us</a>. Comments should be submitted prior to the hearing on Wednesday March 9, 2016. Testimony may include reasons why you support the bill, including personal experiences with animal dissection or any expertise you may have in science education (e.g., if you are a teacher or parent or work in a science-related field).</li></ul><p style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The following are some key points:</p><ul><li style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Annually, <strong>10 million animals are killed</strong> for classroom dissection in the United States.</li><li style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Twenty-three states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, plus the District of Columbia, have already enacted dissection-choice policies or laws similar to S.B. 901 so that students can choose humane science activities, instead of being forced to dissect animals.</li><li style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">A growing majority of young people are opposed to animal experimentation and therefore become upset, distracted, and unable to learn the requisite material when forced to dissect animals.</li><li style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Digital dissection programs save schools significant time and money because they are low-cost or even free and can be reused. </li><li style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Studies show that students prefer using humane digital dissection. Their grades improve, and they learn faster than students who dissect animals.</li><li style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The National Science Teachers Association and the National Association of Biology Teachers support students' right to opt out of dissection.</li></ul><p style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">We're getting closer to making history for some of the <strong>10 million animals who are killed</strong> for the classroom each year in the U.S. by giving Maryland students the choice to opt out of dissection, but it's more important than ever to show your support <em>right now</em>.<br><br>
