A 2001 survey revealed that nationwide, 50.8 % of households had dogs, cats or both. 36.1 percent had dogs, 31.6 percent had cats. And there were an estimated total 57 million cats and 52.5 million dogs living as domestic pets. (Wish I still had the source of these results, but I don't.)

By comparison, in most counties (that don't contain big cities), 25 to 30 percent of households has school-aged children. In big cities, the figure is generally below 15%.

This led one friend of mine, Jack Jones, to propose changing the name of 
our town to "Riverdale Bark".
