Michelle,

The original inhabitants of what is now Maryland included the  
following groups: Nanticoke (Piscataway / Conoy), Powhatan  
(Accohannock), and Susquehannock. The Piscataway tribe was the most  
predominant in this region. Here is a link that talks about the  
Piscataway Nation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ 
Piscataway_Indian_Nation. The late chief Turkey Tayac was  
instrumental in cultural resurgence in the mid to late 20th century.  
They currently exist in the area of Brandywine / LaPlata MD on non- 
reservation land.
