[RP TownTalk] Sexual predators in the area

Your experience in Riverdale Park may be different, but for whatever it's
worth, when I checked the registry in Hyattsville a couple years ago, and
then consulted with colleagues on the City Council about particular names
and addresses, what I found was that the two predominant situations were
these:

1. Individuals who no longer resided at the rooming house or apartment
building they were listed at.

2. Individuals whose parents still lived at the address, but they were long
gone (perhaps had never really lived there after their conviction but listed
their parents' abode as their legal address).

I can only think of one case where the person on the registry was actually
residing at the listed address.

Obviously, the folks on these registries have little incentive to keep their
records accurate or current, and it seems the state has scant resources to
keep tabs on them .

For whatever it is worth, I am cautious about focusing too much on sex
offender lists and websites. It creates a false sense that we "know" who is
dangerous. As our town's recent case demonstrates, the majority of people
who sexually exploit children and teens have never been discovered or
adjudicated. So background checks don't flag them, and offender registries
don't list them, but they could be living or working next door. I am a big
advocate of everyone being attentive to the behaviors of adults around teens
and kids, educating kids about appropriate boundaries, and not being afraid
to ask questions if the behavior of an adult seems out of line. And, since I
am a therapist, I think making treatment available for those who need it is
a "must", because jail time alone does not rehabilitate this problem. I
think these keep us safer as a community. Just my two cents.
