[RP TownTalk] Should apartments pay their fair share in taxes?

I don't know if attachments come through our fine list, but I'm attempting to attach a housing characteristics summary table from Census. Not sure if it answers your question.

I'm curious about the 900 apartments number. It seems low, based on
census data. I'm confident someone (Gerard?) can explain what may look
like discrepancies in the data. (I realize the data categories don't
line up neatly; I also know from an earlier post by Gerard on another
topic that the census reckoning of Riverdale Park's borders may not
align correctly with the actual borders.)

That being said... the 2000 census says Riverdale Park has:

2321 housing units
993 owner-occupied housing units
838 single family owner-occupied units

I'm assuming that the major difference between the 993 and 838 (= 155)
is that some home owners live in their homes and rent out rooms or
garages as apartments. I suppose some of those could count double or
triple if they have multiple units rented.

Keelah points out that there are approx 50 single family rentals.
These presumably count as single housing units but not as
owner-occupied.

If you take the 993 owner-occupied housing units + 900 apartments + 50
single home rentals that gets you to 1943 housing units, which leaves
us about 378 housing units short of 2321. That's 16% of the total.

Of course we're mixing 2000 census numbers with some current town data.
And the categories aren't neat and tidy.
Still, I'm curious about the gap.
Anyone?
