FYI. Monday night the Hyattsville Mayor and the majority of Council defeated a motion to increase the police force to two officers more (48) than the Chief stated two years ago were needed (46) before the annexations of the East West Hwy. commercial area and the University Hills residential area. Hyattsville currently has 38 officers, who spend a lot of their time at the Mall arresting shoplifters and less time in the neighborhoods. There should be 40 officers soon, due to hiring. Many Hyattsville residents have not felt safe or happy with the lack of what we feel is adequate attention from the Mayor and Council to public safety. In weighing spending, there seems to be fancy trash cans, consultants, and soccer fields vs. police protection. An oversimplification of course, but when the appearance of crime keeps increasing, people get unhappy. Some of us have also been made very aware that many crimes go unreported to the police or by the police because of sketchy
data. Even if you can't find the muggers or the muggee, the blood all over the sidewalk makes a statement. Nina

A cellphone store worker was found fatally shot yesterday inside the Hyattsville business, Prince George's County police said.
A customer called police after he found the man, whom police did not identify, inside the AT&T Wireless store in the 5800 block of Baltimore Avenue about noon, police said. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died a few hours later, said Cpl. Diane Richardson, a police spokeswoman.
Investigators did not know whether the shooting occurred during a robbery, Richardson said.

".... I don't know if you know about the ARMED robbery on Rt 1 at The Church of the
Brethren last night (this morning) at 1am. It was just a student going home- yet held up at gunpoint walking from the University to his house in Riverdale Park. The student was unharmed physically, thankfully... "
