Helping officers move in town will ALSO help with retention, more so than letting them drive miles away from work.
I saw a county maintenance truck yesterday whose driver was raving the engine at the red light as if he was at the beginning of a race, then took off at the green light, full speed, only to hit the brakes very hard almost immediately for the next red light. That was plain stupid and the exact opposite of what these hypermilers are doing out there. I am not endorsing hypermilers - they are just another kind of extremist, but demonstrating a lick of conservationism these days is just plain sensitive.
The fact that one doesn't have to pay for gas in company vehicles for work use OR personal use absolutely encourages irresponsible consumption.
Check out this article about responsible cops and their response to high gas prices.

Coot and Jenna: Your posts are absolutely on targetJ These are marvelous ideas-- to look for state and federal assistance to help our Town employees buy homes here in Riverdale Park, and to look at suspending taking home vehicles out-of-county. I agree that having a police car in the neighborhood does offer additional security, and I encourage our Town officials and staff to look at models and funding/incentive programs to help realize these possibilities. After all, these initiatives help make Riverdale Park be a green community.

Jenna, Alice, Marita and all,
While you have your sharp pencils out, play with the pros, cons and cost
of this idea.
I was listening to liberal public radio and heard that some area
counties are assisting county employees to buy homes in the county. This
of course gets county employees, fire and police in the community and
therefore "invested" in the community they serve. It also helps get the
foreclosed homes off the market helping the county tax base by putting
the house back on the tax rolls and raising the value of the rest of the
neighborhood homes.
Well why not here in Riverdale Park? For all the reasons above AND I
know if one of the towns cars, with all those lights on top, sat in the
driveway next door to me, instead of being empty, I would feel more
secure. Besides you could apply the gas money saved to the cost of the
assistance. With the cost of gas the town may break even! ;-)
Besides helping responsible, employed people move into the community
gives you more point than goring someone else's ox for a few tax nickels.

Saw on the evening news last night that the County Executive of Anne Arundel County has suspended "Take Home" vehicle use for County employees. The only exeception is County Police officers who LIVE in the County.Out of County employees and police officers may no longer take their County vehicle home.I am sure other jurisdictions will follow.I still do not understand why our police officers are taking Town owned vehicles so far away from our Town. Delaware ,Pennsylvania, and Virginia just does not make any sense.Even the 30 air mile limit seems very excessive given prices today. Also why does our Town Manager take a large Dodge Durango to Montgomery County? Lets give this benefit to police officers and officials who choose to live in our Town.
