 *What is a Rain Barrel?*

[image: Green Raindrop]The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the
Maryland Department of Natural Resources define a rain barrel as:

...a system that collects and stores rainwater from your roof that would
otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams.

*Why should I put a rain barrel on my house?*

[image: Rain barrel attached to a building]There are a few good reasons to
add a rain barrel to your household.

   1. *A rain barrel can save you money!*
During warm months, a large percentage of every household's water use
goes toward lawn and garden care. By collecting and storiing the rainwater
running into your gutters, a rain barrel can help you avoid paying your
municipal water supplier for 1,300 gallons of that water on average.
   2. *Rain barrels collect soft water that is ideal for household use!*
Unlike water that comes from your tap, water that falls from the sky
contains no chlorine and is free of so-called water hardeners like lime and
calcium. That makes rain barrel water perfect for lawn and garden care (and
   it's all free!).
   3. *Rain barrels protect your local environment!*
Not only will you save you and your community money by reducing energy
costs associated with the delivery of tap water, you will help keep trash
pollution out of our streams, creeks, and rivers and help prevent erosion.
When water runs off your house and onto hard surfaces like the street
or your local storm drain, two things happen. First, that rainwater sweeps
up any trash or chemicals in its path and flushes them out into the nearest
waterway. Second, streets, sidewalks, driveways and other hard surface like
them concentrate all the water from all the houses in your neighborhood, and
create large, fast-moving flows of water destined for the nearest
stormdrain, stream and river. The speed and volume of this water is a
primary cause of soil erosion, especially along the Anacostia River.
