Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 In my earlier days of leisure I used to attend town council meetings fairly regularly. Since the family business has taken over our lives that is one of the things that had to go. So I am very happy to see the Patch providing reporting on the proceedings. Kudos to Sonia. http://riverdalepark.patch.com/articles/meeting-round-up-riverdale-park-legislative-meeting-2 And from that article, I found this news: "Farmers Market Coordinator Jim Coleman announced that the market was the recipient of a USDA grant for about $33,000. He said this grant would help with the marketing of the event and hopefully draw out more people to the market weekly." Huge kudos to Jim Coleman and the town, and everyone on the board of the Farmers Market for this news - this is incredible news! Our already-totally-awesome farmers market can only get better! Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252 Interesting article. Lots of growing pains in our Rt 1 communities. I keep thinking "You can't have it both ways." Everyday riding the MARC train I look out the window at the scene at EYA, I start salivating at the thought of Tara Thai and Busboys & Poets opening before long. These will be new destinations for many people in our area. That means more traffic on Rt 1 (ugh!) and more people looking for alternative ways to get around the congestion. It's interesting to read the accounts of Crittenden - the whole street is a calming device, between the speed bumps that exist and the potholes that are everywhere! I have no answers - I only hope that the creative folks who do this for a living will both come up with some innovative ideas that work AND listen to the needs of people in the neighborhoods being affected by all the changes. What if both Hyattsville and RP both somehow shut off Queensbury to commuter, drive-through traffic. If East-West Highway is a failed artery now, will it come to a complete and utter standstill, like the recent months-long traffic jam in China? "There will be a public hearing on Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. regarding whether the town should take park and planning's offer to buy the property near the old boys and girls clubhouse for $150,000." This should be a referendum. A decision of this magnitude should not be left up to back room deals. $150,000 for two lots on the park? Does who ever proposed this deal think it's 1975? What a deal! I believe there are many people in town who could buy that piece of real estate for that price. I hate to say it but our town council was voted in on what I believe to be a total of lessthan 400 votes. The last time I checked this town has over 2000 residents who have a right to vote. Our government does not represent the interests of the majority and therefore decisions of this magnitude should be a referendum. That's our system of checks and balances, for those who slept through their civics classes. I for one am tired of the fact that Park and Planning owns "all" of our "green space" and then we have to ask permission to use such spaces as Riversdale Mansion, when it was the founding place for our town. If our community examined how we spend our hard earned taxes we could determine what was truly appropriate. Don't take what is said for granted, question and make changes. The sold price of the nearest property in the 5000 block of Tuckerman Street in June of this year was $83,000 for 11,349 sqft. This leaves roughly 7.31 per sqft based on this price. The equivalent value for the combined properties in question is $112, 450 approximately. This estimate obviously oversimplifies the question of building value but does work as a thumbnail snapshot. I think that we are all in agreement about the fact that all of our properties are undervalued but my estimate leaves some doubt about whether your conjecture is correct on the possibility of this being a back room deal. If it is, the town is getting the good end of this deal. I think the appropriate question is whether this is in the long term interest of the town or not based on many factors outside the value of the property. Why do you think more voters would show up for a trumped up referendum? Although historically those against something usually do have a higher turnout. It is easier to be emotional about "throw the bums out!" then "I like things the way they are." Sounds to me like you think this is California where a handful of people can get anything on the ballot; look how that has turned out for them. Check your civics class for the definition/functioning of a representative government. This is not Classical Greece, we don't issues stones to every citizen every time a question comes up. We have elected representatives, with checks and balances being provided by the three branches of our form of government. and I thought I didn't need my meds anymore.
