[RP TownTalk] Route 1, Queensbury, and beyond (Sue Collins)

With all the discussion about 410--I think Takoma Park had the right idea. They refused "to play" and still have a lovely community without a major highway through the middle of it. We live on Queensbury in Hyattsville. Before the "Do Not Enter" signs went up, there were mornings when I was late to work on Campus, because no one would let me out of my driveway. With all the new development, afternoons can be awful getting into and out of our drive. I don't see much of the development as progress. I preferred the cattails, redwing blackbirds, and blooming trees at the Metro. Just another opinion, Nina

Just my humble opinion of course, but I don't see uncontrolled growth and
unregulated traffic as being 'progress.' Don't know that closing off the roads
to all but locals would be a great idea, but really; with all of the new
apartments and condos springing up all over the area, it's pretty much a given
that traffic in our town WILL get much, much worse. Doesn't even have to be
auto traffic, does anyone in town besides myself ride the bus? Most of the time
on the F4, which goes from New Carrollton Metro to Silver Spring, via PG Metro,
you can't even get a seat and many times you can't even get on the bus; it's so
crowded it'll pass you by at the stop. Other local bus patrons in the area have
noticed this, too, the buses are much, much more crowded than they used to be.
Sorry, if I can't even get on the bus to get a seat (or stand), that's not
progress, either. JMO of course

I wonder how that would effect deliveries to businesses in town like Dumm's,
Geppetto Catering, S & J's or those folks north along Rhode Island Ave or in
Town Center?
Of course there would need to be exceptions for the Fire Department so that Ward
1 could continue to get good fire and ambulance service.
Maybe we should make Riverdale Park a gated community. But that might force
people to cut through Edmonston. Not sure how Guy would like that.
Maybe we could go back to 1967 and close 410. That would reunite the town; well
except for those people that would have even more traffic in front of their
homes.
Personally I think you can stand in the way of progress and get left behind or
plan for the inevitable so it has the least adverse affect and the best
advantage.
Trying to hold back progress is like yelling at the tide, eventually you just
get your feet wet.
