Excellent question, Todd. Thanks for asking!  They are certainly an eyesore.
Tangentially, some of the handwritten signs for "yard sales" make me think
that yard sales have become a sideline business rather than a way to
occasionally clear out the attic/garage junk - does the town require permits
for yard sales as I know Hyattsville does?
