Under the Shade of a Tree
August 2012
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The past spring, AWS volunteers planted close to 900 trees throughout the watershed.
These trees are hard at work doing great things for our river -- they are filtering
toxins and pollutants out of rainwater, slowing stormwater on its way to the river,
and helping to prevent erosion. As a result, we want to make sure that these trees
survive the hot, dry summer months.
Most of our volunteer opportunities for the remainder of August involve caring for
these trees. All ages are welcome, so please join us! We have tree maintenance days
scheduled for both weekdays and weekends -- and student service learning hours are
available. Events are planned for the mornings of the 11th, 14th, 15th, 18th, 23rd,
and 25th. Please visit our online calendar [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001CR_9Y6forqscNRctdKhWyjmRhfemJRJ3ZiISqezzp3_6e9mA9HmtZ8f96ucZC6oYiqzkhBWxjTKfp5eQ-vYNZU9Vdt0qts1A-SgfL5hOHd2vsXaTmiHEuS3vHLr0a1Rz]
to view details about individual events and to RSVP.
Feel free to contact our Membership and Volunteer Coordinator with any questions
 at 301-699-6204 ext 109 or mkoenig at anacostiaws.org [mailto:mkoenig at anacostiaws.org].
Prince George's Moves Toward a Healthier, Greener Future
How has your yard handled all the recent rains? Prince George's County property
owners will soon be able to receive a rebate for installing stormwater management
retrofits like trees, rain gardens, and rain barrels to reduce polluted runoff!
Late last month the Prince George's County Council passed CB-40, establishing a
rebate program for these improvements. The Healthy Prince George's Coalition [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001CR_9Y6forquaj26tJQUXOEtfROB1WKEu68-oy9JB5u8Pd8cORZXolEKRH0UzQ5Y_H7VlgAU6CdARA66DLQmPIK7j-ENrHUKnkIJGltP6CD-JcV8Xi7F2_Q==],
including AWS, worked hard to support District 1 Councilmember Mary Lehman's legislation.
Uncontrolled stormwater [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001CR_9Y6forqtxuUkEFdNAnw7NQWoiw1UdHJscF6Isi_3ZWXf0iBmGnfJTki_Z3ZD8NPS28hv61oAXsoKNwEcfoLFfo2rDF1mKDvL-bbmAcS614-t2IIVvLFffO82o-KggY9nObrnZE7EQUZ72qBnLEHXoR18446Ff]
is the biggest pollutant of the Anacostia River, and stormwater retrofits also improve
air quality, raise property values, and beautify our communities. The coalition
is still at work; click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001CR_9Y6forqu2fMSrDojF7r0tBuaVdMNY8DUEGSRP985ILDpncfz3r-U7IHniSCGEFuDi_HiIe4HFijgsXiVDPUV8xKg0ZWk7X7YLN4pIPBE4Tamsi1-oG5cTcGBjy88k195ITjgZPeQ=]
