The numbers are in, and by all accounts our Earth Day Cleanup & Celebration was 
a big success! More than 2,300 volunteers turned out at 39 sites, and removed nearly
83,000 pounds of trash, tires, and bulk items from the watershed. Amazing work!

But it doesn't stop there. AWS volunteers also planted 554 trees in the Bladensburg
Wetlands, and more than 140 people got out on the river at our paddle events. Combined
with the media exposure we received for the cleanup, the State of the River report
card release, and other events, April gave thousands of people the chance to Rediscover
their Anacostia. But it doesn't stop there...

Recreational Opportunities All Month Long
Our Paddle Nights continue through the summer, taking place every other Wednesday
at the Anacostia Community Boathouse. Join us for free canoeing -- and dinner!
We are also adding special Paddle Nights and other programming at Bladensburg Waterfront
Park as part of the Port Towns Anacostia River Recreation Program. On May 12, Robert
Reitsma of the National Zoo will demonstrate bird banding and lead a birdwatching
walk. It's free, and geared toward all ages.

AWS Lecture Series: Commemorating the War of 1812
Join the Aaron Marcavitch of Maryland Milestones/Anacostia Trails Heritage Area 
in a discussion of the commemoration of the Battle of Bladensburg, the new initiatives
for the heritage area, and the work on marketing to increase visitors to the region.
The conversation will also include new work on a marketing plan and a "trail towns"-style
program.
