We are rapidly filling our summer calendar with a variety of fantastic events, from
hands-on stewardship projects (get your service hours!) to a boatload of ways to
 get outside and explore all the Anacostia Watershed has to offer. We've expanded
our popular Paddle Nights with a second series at Bladensburg Waterfront Park, plus
we've added fishing, cycling, and nature walk activities to boot. Many of our events

Stewardship Spotlight: Restoring Wetlands
Late spring and early summer are a great time for wetland plantings!  This past 
year, volunteers have worked side by side with AWS staff to remove invasive species
and trash from the banks of the Anacostia River. Thanks to all that hard work, we
are ready for you to join us for the fun part -- planting native species to restore
this wetland!

We couldn't do it without the help and hard work of folks like you! With more than
eight plantings on the calendar (both weekends and weekdays!), there is bound to
 be a time that works with your schedule. For more information about individual

May Is National Preservation Month

AWS Headquarters

May offers a great opportunity to support AWS and help us to maintain the integrity
of our historic George Washington House (circa 1752) located in the middle of the
industrial area of Bladensburg, MD.  The site has been selected as the only historic
property to participate in the international Sustainable Site Initiative (SITES)
 pilot program which will establish sustainable green design, installation and maintenance.

We have great plans to create a greener, more sustainable site and these plans tie
nicely with our plans to partner with the state, National Park Service, Port Town
communities, and Heritage Area in the commemoration of the Battle of Bladensburg
 and the War of 1812. In addition to improving the grounds, AWS would like to recreate
the Indian Queen Tavern, invite the public to experience 1800s tavern life, and 
discover many of the artifacts found in archeological digs on site. We would also
like to create an interpretive exhibit in this great old house telling the important
story of the Anacostia River, demonstrating the changes the river has experienced
over the centuries and leaving a definite impact on the historical, cultural, and
social development of the Port Towns. Can you help us implement these important
