All good comments, and if you are a federal worker, the other advantage of using marc and then picking up metro at union station is that all of the cost is eligible for the federal transit benefit, whereas parking fees at the metro are not. 

With a weekly or monthly MARC pass, WMATA buses are free. DC Circulator buses are frequent and cost $1, which is less than metro.
