As they say at the Carolina Kitchen in Hyattsville, "Welcome, Welcome, Welcome!"
Restaurants; the aforementioned Carolina Kitchen is only a few minutes away, they have good soul/country food (across from Prince Georges Plaza/the Mall at Prince Georges). As others have mentioned, there's the Shagga Restaurant on Route 1 for Ethiopian food (try the sambusas!), La Pollo Fiesta on Kenilworth Avenue (that chicken soup IS fantastic). Dumms Pizza in town has good subs/pizza. A little ways down the road in Beltsville, MD, there's Sardis for THE best Peruvian rotisserie (spelling?) chicken. A little ways away in Hillandale there's a great Indian restaurant called Jewel of India. Both Shagga and Jewel of India had very favorable reviews in the Washington Post .
As for home and garden; I'm not sure if Behnkes' Nursery in Beltsville is still open, does anyone else know of any garden centers closer in? I go to the Lowes in New Carrollton (just a short drive/bus ride) for plants, every spring they have a decent selection. There's also a Home Depot in Hyattsville and in College Park, they also have plants. If you feel like taking a drive, Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville and Greenstreet Gardens in Lothian are lovely garden centers; not just plants, but all the accessories, gifts, etc. (And be sure to hit Homestead Gardens around Christmas for their apple cider donuts; fantastic!).
Don't know if you have pets and are looking for a veterinarian in town, but if you do, Lynn Animal Hospital is located right on Route 1 and the doctors and staff are just fantastic. Too, what makes them good for me is, they work on "exotics" as well as dogs and cats and I've been taking my guinea pigs to Lynns' for years.
There's 2 public libraries fairly close, one in Hyattsville and one in New Carrollton. If you need public transport, we're close to the Prince Georges Plaza and College Park Metro stations. You can catch the Metro bus out on Route 1. The Bus (PG County bus) runs through town, but only on weekdays.
The closest grocery stores are a Giant across from PG Plaza, a Safeway in Greenbelt, and Shoppers Food Warehouse in College Park and New Carrollton. Also some Save-a-Lots, Bestways around the area. If you want anything like Wegmans or Trader Joes, you'll have to look farther out. Plenty of Latin/American markets, my favorite is LaGrande in Riverdale Plaza. If you want beer or wine, some grocery items, etc., our own Town Center Market has a great selection. they even carry some items from the Thursday farmers market, gourmet nut butters, some organic cheese, etc.
If there's anything else you're looking for, just ask; there's lots of good people here who can offer suggestions.

Subject: [RP TownTalk] New to Riverdale Park!
Hi everyone! I'm in the process of moving to Riverdale Park (Just east of Route 1), and am excited to join the community! Any tips for new residents? I'm looking for any information you can offer in a few areas:
1. Home and garden stores -- my new place has a small garden area, and I'm itching to get planting!
2. Running or biking trails>?
3. Favorite restaurants?
Thanks, everyone!
