[RP TownTalk] Chimney Cleaning

I was asked at the town meeting: "how often should I clean the chimney from using a wood burning stove?"  Good question and I did not have an answer.
 
The National Fire Protection Association identifies chimney fires as a significant cause of residential fires in the US.  The only definitive answer that I gleaned was that a chimney should be inspected by a professional at least annually.  In terms of cleaning, there is not a set standard - cleaning frequency depends on use and the type of wood burned in the fireplace or stove.
 
The fire department's recommendation is an annual inspection by a chimney professional and discuss actual cleaning with the professional.
