If you aren't on the e-mail list for the Central Kenilworth Avenue
Revitalization Community Development Corporation, read on for great
information about community development work that is happening to the east
of Riverdale Park.

Much of what is in this letter applies to us here in Riverdale Park too
(for example, food trucks!)

Many of the kids who attend Templeton Elementary, our neighborhood school
on Carters Lane, do not get an opportunity to spend much time outdoors.
Some of them live in apartments or in what some would describe as perhaps
an unsafe area and, their parents often do not let them go outside and
play. They look at life through a window. But starting next spring, the
TES students will experience the great outdoors when they are in school.
TES has partnered with the organization "REAL School Gardens" and, was
selected as the 100th school to participate in a design contest for what
TES' ideal garden would look like. Mrs. Barton, the Earth Day teacher at
TES, working with the students stated that "we chose three original plans
from a second grader, third grader and fourth grader and, hope to
incorporate some of their ideas, e.g., vegetable gardens, butterfly
gardens, a water feature like a pond to observe wildlife, and rain buckets,
into the actual school garden. The overall goal of the garden will be to
give students and teachers an opportunity to have hands-on outdoor
instruction. All grade levels will be welcome to use the garden and REAL
School Garden staff will work with TES teachers for three years to help
them adapt lessons that will meet the needs of specific age groups using
components from the garden. Mrs. Barton further indicated that "this garden
is going to be such a great learning tool for the area and we are going to
encourage all community members to come by, help with the upkeep, help in
ensuring the garden remains a safe haven and valuable resource to the
students and community. We are creating an amazing space together".
CKAR looks
forward to its continuing partnership with TES. CKAR encourages our
businesses to become actively involved with the school!
Food Trucks Coming to Prince George's County!

On October 6, 2015, the Prince George's County Council voted to permit food
trucks in Prince George's County for the first time in a decade. Karen
Toles and Mary Lehnman co-sponsored the legislation. The mobile eateries
will have to operate in approved "food truck hubs" (capped at 12 hubs),
located within a quarter-mile of certain Metro stations and county parks.
They are still not allowed to park in residential neighborhoods and are not
allowed to vend from the side of the road. The Prince George's County
Revenue Authority (which operates 24/7) is authorized to ticket, fine and
tow any violators. Food truck vendors must comply with strict rules on
garbage disposal, undergo extensive safety and health inspections, and pay
a considerable business licensing fee - $500 for 60-day operation and
$3,500 for longer periods. A committee of citizens will oversee the
food-truck program. Each hub will be managed by a coordinator to ensure
compliance with the various regulations. The council voted to exclude four
Metro stations as possible hub locations - Branch Avenue, West Hyattsville,
Largo Town Center and Prince George's Plaza - after the council members who
represent those locations said their constituents were concerned that food
trucks would draw crime or trash or have other negative impacts. This is a
first-step for the food truck hubs and will allow more healthy options, as
well as allow individuals to become entrepreneurs in a county that has
numerous food deserts.
Prince George's County Sunday Liquor Sales Approved by Board of License
Commissioners with a Provision!

Members of the CKAR Business Committee attended a Public Hearing of the
Board of License Commissioners on 9/22/15 to provide testimony relating to
the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sundays in Prince George's County. The
team, partnering with District 3 County Councilwoman Dannielle Glaros and
the Town of Riverdale Park, provided letters of support to the
Commissioners requesting that the $50,000 investment in upgrades to the
building exterior or interior *not be* waived. Councilwoman Glaros' letter
specifically stated that indicating that "the $50,000 investment
requirement is critical to shed the "seedy" image of so many of our alcohol
stores; to encourage Prince George's County residents to spend their
discretionary dollars in Prince George's County establishments; and, to
help improve our communities." The Commissioners agreed that the $50,000
investment was crucial to the appearance of the County and, community and
that if investments were not made by establishments within a year, the
license would be revoked. CKAR's presentation included additional and
grave concerns about one neighborhood establishment selling alcoholic
beverages to intoxicated individuals. This activity has become a public
nuisance for the community: loitering, public urination and pan
handling. Before
the end of the hearing, an agreement was made by the owner of that business
to withdraw his request to waive the $50,000 investment requirement. The
owner and CKAR members will meet on a regular to discuss concerns, ideas
and to hopefully, develop a sustainable and beneficial relationship that
will be supportive of the community!
Prince George's County
Clean-up Green-Up!
The *Templeton Knolls Civic Association (TKCA)* was recently recognized by
the Dept. of Public Works and Transportation for its continued partnership
in the Clean-Up, Green Up program! County Executive Baker established the
program four years ago and it has become a very successful project and
mainstay for our community, as well as, other communities throughout Prince
George's. This event supports our initiative to make our community cleaner
and greener by conducting individual community plantings and coordinating
beautification activities throughout Templeton Knolls. This year we
continued to beautify Templeton Elem. with bulbs, shrubs and trees. Students
from William Wirt Middle School and Bladensburg High School were able to
receive community-service hours for the time and dedication they spent on
the project. They were also able to receive a hands-on lesson with the gift
of trimming trees as our TKCA member, Mr. Ashraf, diligently beautified
Carters Lane. This is an excellent opportunity for you, our businesses, to
become a partner and help to beautify your establishments. If you are
interested in partnering with CKAR, please do not hesitate to contact us at
