That’s a matter of opinion.

Santa Claus is very important to children and the history surrounding him is not minutiae.  You are inferring that Saint Nicolas is minutiae yet his works gave rise to giving during the Christmas season.  Saint Nicolas has a grand legacy which continues to this day and will continue long after we are gone.  God bless him and his works.

Samantha,

Thanks for sending this out. I think we're getting caught up in the minutiae as to where Santa Claus, Saint Nick, Sinter Klaas, came from.

He comes from most of our childhoods wherever that may be...but as far as exact address, we can ask him at Riversdale or PG Mall over Xmas.

Andrew

Sinter Klaas comes from Spain and I would not say he is only a Flemish phenomenon but Dutch as well.  Maybe even more-so Dutch.

Sinterklaas is also from Spain by the way.  He comes on December 5th to deliver presents while Santa Claus doesn't come until Dec 25th.  They are not the same people.  Santa lives in the North Pole while Sinterklaas lives in Spain.

Hi Samantha

In the spirit of Christmas, Sint Niklaas is a city in Belgium not the Flemish forerunner to Santa Claus.

Saint Nicolas is the model for Santa Claus and was born to a Greek family in the 3rd century.  There is a church dedicated to Saint Nicolas in Sint Niklaas.

Children will be reading your post.  It would be nice to correct it to reflect who "Santa Claus" really was so these children can pass it on to their children.
