[RP TownTalk] Breakfast with Sint Niklaas at Riversdale - Registration is Open!

Hello, all!

Riversdale has been celebrating Sint Niklaas Day for over 10 years and we are thrilled that, for many area families, it has become a tradition to return year after year.

Rosalie Stier Calvert, the mistress of Riversdale, was born in Antwerp in what was at the time considered Flanders and what we now know as present-day Belgium. To that end, many of the programs at the museum highlight Belgian and Flemish traditions. When we began celebrating Sint Niklaas Day, traditionally observed on December 6, staff researched heavily, as we do for all our programs. This research included consulting with the Embassy of Belgium to make sure we were getting the details right. Staff graciously answered our questions about spelling, garments, symbols, and more. In the past, the Embassy has actually visited during Sint Niklaas week with their DC adoption school (the school and Embassy work together all year learning about Belgian culture) and expressed enthusiasm for our event.

The Flemish Sint Niklaas does have roots, as many Santa traditions do, in a real figure named Nicholas from Myra in Asia Minor. Many of the symbols of our modern Santa/Sint Niklaas (stockings, oranges, chocolate coins) stem from this story, as well. To celebrate the connection, we read a short story about Nicholas of Myra before the breakfast. Some of the Flemish Sint Niklaas connections include serving traditional Belgian breakfast fare, including waffles made with pearl sugar (maple syrup & butter not needed!), bacon, oranges (another Sint Nik symbol), speculaas (traditional holiday spice cookies), and more. Children receive a stocking from Sint Niklaas, which includes several gifts and a little note explaining their significance. Instead of reindeer, the Belgian Sint Niklaas makes his trip by horse, and having one on site is another lovely highlight the children love.

I invite you to check out www.stnicholascenter.org<http://www.stnicholascenter.org>, a wonderful site and resource for the many traditions, stories, and celebrations of St Nicholas/Santa/Sint Nik from all over the world! It even includes info on how the town of Sint-Niklaas in Belgium celebrates the day.

And, of course, please feel free to call the office if you’d like to register any “good list” children in your families for the event. While the 9am seating is sold out, we do have space at 11am. We hope to see you soon!

Cheers,
Samantha

That’s a matter of opinion.

Santa Claus is very important to children and the history surrounding him is not minutiae. You are inferring that Saint Nicolas is minutiae yet his works gave rise to giving during the Christmas season. Saint Nicolas has a grand legacy which continues to this day and will continue long after we are gone. God bless him and his works.

Samantha,

Thanks for sending this out. I think we're getting caught up in the minutiae as to where Santa Claus, Saint Nick, Sinter Klaas, came from.

He comes from most of our childhoods wherever that may be...but as far as exact address, we can ask him at Riversdale or PG Mall over Xmas.

Andrew

Sinter Klaas comes from Spain and I would not say he is only a Flemish phenomenon but Dutch as well. Maybe even more-so Dutch.

Sinterklaas is also from Spain by the way. He comes on December 5th to deliver presents while Santa Claus doesn't come until Dec 25th. They are not the same people. Santa lives in the North Pole while Sinterklaas lives in Spain.

Hi Samantha

In the spirit of Christmas, Sint Niklaas is a city in Belgium not the Flemish forerunner to Santa Claus.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sint-Niklaas

Saint Nicolas is the model for Santa Claus and was born to a Greek family in the 3rd century. There is a church dedicated to Saint Nicolas in Sint Niklaas.

Children will be reading your post. It would be nice to correct it to reflect who "Santa Claus" really was so these children can pass it on to their children.
