[RP TownTalk] Question - homeless people

 Audrey and Heather, thanks for the suggestions and letting me know the woman's name.  I've also given her a few dollars when I can and when I've asked her if she's ok, she gives me the sweetest smile and says she's fine.   Yes, I  KNOW there's lots of homeless out there, yes I KNOW we can't change the world, yes I KNOW many people are on the streets because of their own actions - but when you see one little woman outside every day like she was at 5:15 this morning, sitting all wrapped up in a chair,  it does get to you.  (at least it does, me).  I don't know what my life might hold in store somewhere down the line, so I try to help others as best I can.  Sorry, I didn't mean to stir up a controversy, just wondered if anyone had any ideas.

Seems to me like you are doing the lecturing.

I've hired and continue to hire (for ~20 years) homeless folks to work in the yard and on the house/properties.  I've also let them sleep in the basement during rough weather or in the winter.  I've taken them to (more like forced) and visited them in the hospital when they were ill, received their mail, lent them money, bought them food, helped them with their finances, substance abuse, and getting work.  There's more, but that's enough of the motherhood.

If you want to help homeless folks.  Help them help themselves.  You can't help all of them, but if each of us helps just one, that's all it will take.

Who was it that said "If you want to make the world a better place, take a look in the mirror and make that change"?  Let's stop the BS and get down to it shall we.

You want to see homeless, go about 300 yards south of Riverdale Rd along the NE branch of the Anacostia.  It’s common to see groups of homeless people living in the wooded area on the East side of the creek. Subject: [RP TownTalk] Question - homeless people   Might be a "dumb question" but was hoping someone could advise me - If I see someone who I presume to be homeless on the streets on a fairly regular basis, should I contact the police every time, or?  There's a middle-aged African/American woman that I see quite frequently very early in the morning, she seems to stay on the bus benches near the Rite Aid or the Wells Fargo Bank on Route 1.  Sometimes I've seen her in a little fold-up chair.  One time I saw her later in the morning, she seemed to be rather "out of it," for want of a better phrase, so I contacted the police and asked if they could see if she was ok (she insisted she was, but seemed rather incoherent).  I realize that the police/town can't force anyone to get off the streets or go into a shelter; on the other hand, I hate to see someone in that situation, esp. as cold weather will be here soon.   Any suggestions?   Thanks.
