[RP TownTalk] From the list moderator: spam getting through to the list

You likely noticed a rather crude spam message getting through to TownTalk
a couple of days ago - a couple of people have brought this to my
attention, perhaps curious how it happened.
Many - sometimes hundreds per day - spam gets caught in TownTalk's spam
filters and are left for the list moderator to approve or reject for
distribution to the list. (In addition there are the messages that are not
spam but posted by non-subscribers, or that were sent to multiple
addressees (TownTalk wants you to send messages to TownTalk without a lot
of other addressees), etc.
The message that got through over the weekend was posted by or, I should
say, it *appeared* to have been posted by a subscriber - thus it went
straight through to the list w/o getting caught in the filters. That
subscriber's email must have been hacked, which is how this happened.
Fortunately such abuses happen rarely.
Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions or
concerns - thanks.
