I would like to step back and focus on the legislation proposal.
I don't know if the legislative meeting was held, as it was not
broadcast on the cable channel.
I was under perhaps the misimpression that legislative meetings are
supposed to be broadcast.
I have not seen the proposed wording other than what Bruce passed as an
attachment.
I am aware of the actions of other towns in this sort of matter.
This is a proposed change in the charter. We have had couple of those
changes that caused concern as they were sort of rushed through without
giving the public sufficient time to raise their voice and understand
the issues.
I suggest that this sort of change should be part of a referendum, to
allow all current CITIZENS who are residents of Riverdale Park to voice
their opinion at the ballot box.
While I appreciate the concept of all residents having a voice in the
town, as opposed to the question of rights of citizens to vote, the
wording seems to do away with the concept of a citizen as a basis for
the right to vote. I don't know of this sort of status in any other
country. I can't imagine a non-citizen being given the right to vote in
any other country.
I for one would vote against such a charter change as it diminishes the
rights of citizens of this country, in this state, in this county, and
in this town. Citizenship is open to those who wish to seek it.
Sincerely,
Robert Smith
