[RP TownTalk] Park

I am just wondering if anyone has ever seen people using that park for it's intended purposes.
One of the issues, I think, for some of our apartment dwelling residents, is the reality of living in crowded conditions with no yard to enjoy. I would assume that the parks are important to them to have a a place to be outside. Or, perhaps, under the cover of darkness, some privacy.
Yes, the parks are important to all of us, but many of us do have backyards in which we can play and relax.
So what I'm asking is, is there any legal use of that park happening? I've not seen anyone, ever, having a picnic there. But I only see it as I drive by. It is an odd little spot. Once the new trees grow in I think it will be much improved, but at this time it is not to inviting. Is there parking there?
I would not want to take that space from people who enjoy it legitimately. To whom is it important and what would they be willing to do to keep it?
Once that is answered to satisfaction I think that letting the school use it is an EXCELLENT, FABULOUS idea.

Throwing money at a problem doesn't always work. Ask any mom with kids.
What works is time, energy, attention and hard work. Andy has the right idea -
get out there and do something. Follow his example and before you know it - we
will see a difference. I believe he not only removed the public graffiti,
but he did pick up some dead chickens as well. I've seen Del and his bucket
picking up trash. Just think if all of us on the list made an effort what we
could do!

I don't think I've seen this event announced yet here in Riverdale Park, so
here it is!

Due to popular request, 'The Tavern' at the Calvert House in Riverdale Park
will be hosting a Parent / Kids happy hour beginning tomorrow evening,
Wednesday, November 29 from 4-7 pm.
Bring your own cds to play on the house PA system (kid-friendly cds please!)
The Tavern menu includes their famous crabcake sandwiches, pizza, buffalo
wings, Kobe boneless short ribs, Bison burgers, ruebens, roasted eggplant
dip, stuffed mushroom caps, crabmeat cocktail, shrimp cocktail, hot dogs,
fries, onion rings, etc...
They have also added a nice selection of microbrews, including:
Troegs Hopback, Troegs Rugged trail, Troegs Troegenator, Harpoon UFO,
Harpoon Winter Ale, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Rogue Hazelnut Brown, St Rogue Red,
Dogfish head 60 minute IPA, Dogfish Raison D'etre, Smuttynose Old Brown Dog
Ale, Smuttynose IPA, Fullers ESB
They also have a nice selection of fine wines.
And, of course, lots of Shirley temples, juices and water.
They will provide crayons and paper and they encourage you to bring kids
toys to share.
Please also note, this is NOT a heavy drinking event. It is meant to be
another venue for you to relax after work with new and old friends and
neighbors. Also, since this is the first event of its kind at the Calvert
House, your suggestions are encouraged to help to make this a fun and
worthwhile regular event.
Please contact Rob Nicholson at drummerrob at hotmail.com if you have any
questions.
Hope to see you there!

If you want to look at a good map of the site, try:
http://maps.google.com/maps?
oi=map&q=5006+Riverdale+Rd,+Riverdale,+MD+20737
Look at the playground inside the fence. Just outside the fence is a
park section several times the size of the playground. Kids can't use
that park space during recess. Current enrollment at Riverdale
Elementary is 500+. Why not expand the playground into a space similar
in size to those found at University Park Elementary, Paint Branch
Elementary, and Berwyn Heights Elementary?
The playground could be extended to either go to the edge of the
gulley, or with a little more work, all the way to the edge of the bike
path. As usual, the school playground would be fenced. The land
outside the fence is owned not by our school system but by Park and
Planning. A small section might be owned by our Town.
Playground expansion could serve three purposes:
1) create a better space for burning off student energy
2) increase the attractiveness/effectiveness of Riverdale Elementary
3) fix problems caused by a poorly designed section of park
How could this happen?
The town could ask Park and Planning staff to review the site and work
with school and community representatives to develop a plan. The plan
could include converting the gulley to a bottomless, covered-over
culvert so where the gulley now stands, a large smooth grass playground
would come into existence. It could include the planting of new trees
following a landscaping plan.
*************
For that matter, the gulley is fed by a stone-age storm water
management system which is long-past due re-engineering for better
water quality. I'm talking about all those concrete troughs that run
from University Park through Riverdale Park to the river. I recently
found out that Prince George's County is the home of Larry Coffman.
Larry is a nationally known expert on designing ecological storm water
systems. He used to work for our county but is now a consultant.
Here is a link to a quick summary of Larry's approach.

I think that the town citizenry can set the tax rate as it sees fit.
Can't blame PG County for a cap on town rates. Have to find someone
else.
