If you love banjos, Stephen Wade, old time music, the music of Hobart Smith,
or all or any of the above then there is an exciting and free, late summer
concert opportunity in neighboring Hyattsville:
Stephen Wade & Friends are having their Philadelphia Folk Festival dress
rehearsal concert at the Hyattsville City Hall, second floor, Prangley Room,
8 pm, Thursday, August 16, 2007. Free admission.
Stephen Wade & Friends: Mike Craver, James Leva, and Zan McLeod
presenting a new version of "In Scared Trust: Remembering the Music of
Hobart Smith." The concert pivots around Hobart Smith's 1963 appearance
at the Philadelphia Folk Festival where he and Jimmie Martin were judges
of that year's PFF banjo contest. Emphasizing Hobart Smith's influences
and learning, large-screen historical images from his past accompany the
narrative. The second half of the evening focuses on various workshops
assigned the group. Instruments include five-string banjo, guitar,
piano, pump organ, fiddle, harmonica, slide guitar, mandolin, step
dancing, along with singing.
