Rob's post made me think of a question I've been meaning to ask--what kind
of businesses/development would people like to see in Riverdale Park?
What would you like to see at the corner of East-West Hghway & Rt. 1?
What businesses would you like to see fill the town center?
I think these are tough questions to answer. And then once you answer them,
there's considering whether they're good for Riverdale Park in general,
whether they're sustainable, and whether there's any chance of landing such
business in our town.
Personally, I miss both the bike store and the bookstore. I'm a fan of the
new pet store and I'd love to see an ice cream parlor or local cafe. But I'm
not much of a shopper, so really I'd rather have the whole town center be
one giant library! I wouldn't mind seeing some type of diner on the corner
of Rt. 1 and E/W Hghway. What I'm getting at is that there's probably some
pretty diverse interests and wants in terms of development and that finding
a good mix will be challenging but worthwhile.
So, what would others like to see?

PS--I have to agree with a previous poster that I like the food and the
atmosphere at Calvert House, but seldom go there because of the dinner
prices--it kind of occupies a middle ground for me, where if I'm going to
spend that much money on food, it's not my first choice, and if I just want
to grab some dinner, it's too pricey an option. I try to support many of the
other local businesses whenever possible (Dumm's, Lynn Animal Hospital, Old
Towne Pets, the farmer's market, etc.).

We say we want mom and pop outlets (no chain stores) that are
pedestrian and family friendly with outdoor street-scape features.
Hmm, have you been to the Calvert House Inn lately?
Its an easy walk (for most of us and a short drive for the rest).
You can sit outside on the front patio (recently decorated).
And as part of the Inn's 25th anniversary celebration kids-eat-free
(for children under 12).
Be sure to say hello to Susan and Fred (the mom and pop owners).
They would like that. You might too.
If we make them a smashing success, then we may attract more
like them. Is it perfect? No. So help make it better. Tell Fred and Susan
your suggestions and complaints. Really. They appreciate it.
They have a new menu item - hard shell crabs, anytime, and they still
have the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet ($7.95 Mon-Fri, Noon-2:30).
So head down there and enjoy a nice meal and help make RP
into something better!
