Marc,
Red and orange stains are mostly hard water stains, meaning the solid particulates that will not evaporate that are dissolved in the water. Usually lead, iron and manganese that the water picked up on route from the treatment plant to your house. If the stains are pinkish, it might be some sort of biofilm.
