To Everyone!
I walked home from PG Brake & Front End on Kenilworth AV (to 5308 Riverdale RD) today after dropping off my car for service.
I could not believe the deterioration of mostly all the properties on the way. I was ashamed of where I lived. I was also angry at my
neighbors for destroying their homes. For, most of the damage was due to neglect or mistreatment of the property.
I'm ready to fight against any further neglect or mistreatment which includes the establishment of businesses known to attract
questionable clientele and unwanted behavior like loitering. A liquor store at the corner of Riverdale RD and Kenilworth AV will
only add to the deterioration of this town and I will fight against it!

Friends and neighbors,
I rarely come to you the town's residents requesting that you take specific action, but this is one case that I will. It is my opinion and one shared by and endorsed by unanimous vote of the town council, that the proposed liquor store for the corner of Riverdale Road and Kenilworth Avenue is a very bad proposal and one that this town must resist.
Increasing the number of liquor stores anywhere along Kenilworth is probably not a good thing, but to put a drive through liquor store at that corner will cause increased traffic congestion, spread the problems associated with loitering and public alcohol consumption, and generally impede the revitalization of that area that is showing real potential.
I am joining with a broad and growing coalition to stop this proposed liquor store, and hope to get it reversed even before seeing it go before the liquor board on February 22. However, if it should make it to a hearing, I ask that any of you who can be available on that date come and testify against it. I will keep you informed of the situation as it progresses.
Thanks and best wishes,
Vern

For posting on towntalk…thanks.
Friends,
As you may know, an application is pending for an alcoholic beverage license for Jin Lee Palace, which will be located at 5620 Kenilworth Avenue (corner of Riverdale Rd and Kenilworth). The application is for a class B+ license with a drive in window, which would include on/off premises sales, seven-day beer and wine (on sale), and six-day beer, wine, and liquor sales (off sale). In case you are curious, for most days on premise sales could happen anytime except between 2am-6am. On December 17, 2007, the Town of Riverdale Park voted to oppose the request.
Councilman Olson is working with the town and nearby civic associations as well as our state delegation to ensure that the Board of License Commissioners oppose this application. The Board of License Commissioners rarely opposes an application, so it is essential that the commissioners hear that there is significant opposition from citizens, businesses, and other political leaders. In order to stop this liquor license, we MUST have more than 20 people committed to attending the hearing. Lucky for us, the hearing is scheduled right in our backyard! The hearing date is February 26, 2007 at 10am at 6200 Baltimore Avenue, 3rd Floor. It our office's experience that petitions and letters in advance of the hearing are important, but having people turn out and testify is absolutely essential. Please contact Wanda Brooks or I, if you are interested in testifying or will be able to come to the hearing. We can be reached at 301-952-3060 or at
wjbrooks at co.pg.md.us or dmglaros at co.pg.md.us. We will likely be holding a mini-planning meeting in advance of the hearing, so stay tuned for the date and time. We are also collecting information and stats which could be used in testimony and I know from speaking with Pat Prangley that the Riverdale Park Police will be providing stats as well. I have attached a copy of the town's letter just in case you were not at the town's Special Legislative Meeting when this case was discussed.
On a personal note, I have seen a few liquor license applications in the county, but this application is the most troubling application that I have seen. While it may be great to have a nice restaurant that sells alcohol on this site during certain hours, a drive in window and off premise sales are, I believe, completely inappropriate for this location. The use would only add to the troubles our community faces on Kenilworth—crime, public drinking, loitering, and traffic congestion—and would do nothing to enhance and revitalize the corridor. We have numerous locations in the area where people can already purchase alcohol. I hope each of you will become actively involved in this issue. Your support is needed!
Best wishes,
Dannielle
