Trips for Kids Lead the Way on National Get Outdoors Day
Trips for Kids Metro DC’s (TFK) plans for celebrating the first annual National Get Outdoors Day (June 14, 2008) are so great, they need three days.

Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, Prince Georges County, MD, Local and National Parks. Award winning children’s health organization TFK will highlight the importance of getting children involved in outdoor activities through their partnerships with the National Park Service.

“National Get Outdoors Day is a fantastic way to highlight what our volunteers and staff do year round -- provide fun healthy activities to local youth in a natural setting” said Julie Childers, Executive Director of TFK. “Hopefully people will recognize how important these opportunities are for children and join the cause or donate to organizations like ours.”

On June 14, TFK’s youth mountain bike team- Team TFK will lead youth nature bicycle rides at parks in Northern Virginia and Prince George’s County, MD in preparation for the 2008 Northern Virginia Youth Mountain Bike League Race series. Children interested in participating in the ride and learning about the league can also participate. TFK will make bikes and helmets available to those youth who participate and do not have equipment. Rides are open to youth ages eight to eighteen.

On June 15, TFK and National Park Service Rangers will lead a family-oriented bicycle ride for local youths and their families from Gravelly Point Park just outside of National Airport in Virginia to tour the National Capital Park Monuments. This educational and fun event provides a different view of our Capital area and outdoor physical activity for anyone who can ride a two wheel bike.

On June 16, TFK will be hitting the dirt! With the 400 acres of rolling hillside at Fort Dupont Park in Southeast DC as our classroom and playground, TFK will promote environmental education and physical activity in the great outdoors though youth nature bicycle rides. These rides are open to youth ages eight to eighteen.

All of these events highlight TFK’s ongoing commitment to providing youth opportunities to get fit in nature.

  About Trips for Kids
Trips for Kids Metro DC (TFK), is a 501c (3) children’s health organization established in 2003. TFK’s mission is to mentor at-risk youth and provide opportunities to experience nature. We mentor the youth regarding the need for physical activity, smart nutritional choices, the environment and its impact within their lives and community. TFK utilizes bicycles and nature as tools to convey these messages in a fun, educational manner through a myriad of youth programs. We strive to combat daily stressors through challenging but safe excursions. Our program is simple in design -- provide positive reinforcement, safe exercise, healthy nutrition, and fun in the outdoors.

  About NV YOUTH
NV Youth Mountain Bike League is a partnership of TFK, Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts, Potomac Velo Club and EX2 Adventures. The NV Youth Mountain Bike League was established to get youth active in mountain biking. In 2007, the number of youth participating in organized youth mountain bike rides and races more than doubled due to the efforts of TFK and the NV Youth Partners.
