[RP TownTalk] water main break at Madison and Taylor

As a former employee of the New York City electric company, Con Edison, I
have been trained to let the utilities and/or first responders know when wires,
water, or gas aren't where they're supposed to be. I would need to disagree
with taking the problem first to a council member. Call the folks who can
fix it, alert elected officials after. I would not have been able to live with
myself when my neighbor, standing in her flooded basement, asked me why I
didn't call WSSC if I saw water coming out of the asphalt in the middle of the
road.
I finally got through to WSSC in the early afternoon and reported it. The
fire department finally drove past the break about 2 or 3pm. And the mayor
and councilmember have contacted me to let me know they are aware. So now
there's nothing left to do but...
...wait for the boil water alert...

This is the type of problem that should be addressed first to a Council
Member. If their response is not prompt or adequate you may try calling the
Mayor. Trying to deal with utilities is time consuming and often frustrating
experience. We have a governing body that was voted into office for just this
type of problem. My experience has been good, and I'm pleased with the mayor
and those on the town council. We can only hope the they can cut trough the red
tape of public utilities and town services better than private property
owners and town residents.

Water is bubbling up in the middle of Madison Street at the corner of Taylor
Road. It has been active from at least 8:30 am, when I first saw it. I
reported it to the Riverdale Police dept dispatch, who declined to report it and
instead gave me the emergency number to WSSC. I have not been able to get
through to WSSC; the line has been constantly busy for hours on end. I
reported it to the fire department since there is a fire hydrant just a few feet
away. Almost 4 hours later, it doesn't look like anyone has investigated or
done anything so I reported it to the fire department again. And WSSC's
emergency line is still busy.
This is a disconcerting trend since there seems to have been a similar
problem at the corner of 410 and Taylor. What's going on and why is the response
so slow? This might only be a bad problem now, but the longer it goes on it
can become a neighborhood disaster...
