ERCO was an innovative aircraft company that invented a spin proof plane. It was the largest employer in Prince Georges County at one time. During WWII what is now known as the Cafritz property was the site of a temporary housing project for the 24 hour necessary workers at the ERCO plant. The company manufactured gun turrets for  for bombers.

Come to the Riverdale Park book signing at Berwyn Heights town center Sunday Feb 19th from 2:00 to 4:00PM and learn more about the history of Riverdale Park. Its free and wine, cheese and light refreshments will be served.

They used to taxi the ERCO planes from the plant to the airstrip down what 
is approximately now Rivertech court, where Raytheon, 
NOAA and USDA buildings are now, and across River Road (none of which 
was there at the time).  It's a surprise to see how many air fields there 
were in this area in the infancy of aviation.  The history of airflight and 
this area is fascinating even for non-aviation buffs.
