If I may,
just a suggestion and the approach I have used -
I write up all the particulars (dates away, contact numbers, who may 
stop by the house, etc) and drop a couple of copies that at the station 
so they have it. Always fun to talk to the dispatcher/officer on the 
phone, but I sometimes garble on the phone, and this seems to make their 
jobs a little easier.
