Ode To The Little Black Kitty on Ravenswood
The Little Black Kitty found himself on Ravenswood oneday. He was homeless. He was hungry. He was lonesome. A lady came outof one of the houses and saw him. Shewent inside and came back out with food for him. He wouldn’t come near her. He was soscared. She put the food under theboxwood bush in her front yard and left. As soon as she left, he gobbled up all the food. He was happy.
The next day the lady came out and put more food under the boxwoodbush. The Little Black Kitty waiteduntil she went away then ate it. Afterseveral days, he wasn’t so scaredanymore. He came closer and closer tothe lady. Soon he would wait for herat the front door. When she would go on vacation, she would askme to put food out for Little Black Kitty. A few years went by and the Little Black Kittystayed on Ravenswood. He did travel abit, so you might have seen him on Taylor, Sheridan…
The Lady decided to move one day. She was moving to Florida. She wouldn’t be taking Little Black Kittywith her. She hoped someone would feedhim. I put food under the boxwood bushfor him the following days. One day I talkedto another neighbor and she was also putting food out for Little BlackKitty. She said she would like to gethim to come to her porch and eat. So, Istopped feeding him and Chrissy tookover the project. She did get LittleBlack Kitty to come to her porch and eat. She made a little bed for him on the porch. She finally convinced LBK that she was a friend and he let her pet him. Soon he was sitting in her lap purring! He was falling in love. Chrissy had 2 cats and a dog in her home andsince she knew nothing about LBK’shealth she didn’t want to take a chance bringing him inside. As she would take her little dog, Fernando, for a walk, LBK would join them and finish out the entire walk. As LBK came to trust Chrissy, she decided itwas time to get him in for a health exam. She called Alley Cats and they helped her get him shots and get himneutered. Chrissy was thinking then shecould bring him inside and he could live a comfortable life. That didn’t work out. Her resident cats and LBK just didn’t hit it off. So, LBK lived on the porch and Chrissy spent time with him out there. He sat in her lap and cuddled and purred.
Last Friday LBK went on the walk as usual. He seemed fine. On Saturday morning he wasn’t there for breakfast. Chrissy was a little worried because healways showed up. She went in the backyard to do some yard work, looked up and there was LBK as sick as could be. He was weak, trembling, and throwing up. Chrissy immediately took him to the vet. They put him on an IV and oxygen. They told her to come back at 2 since theyclosed at 3 and she would have to decide what to do or take him to an emergencyclinic. At 2 she went back to the vetand they said he had FIV and an enlarged heart. They gave her medicine and she took him home. She made a space for him in one of herbedrooms where she could take care of him. He was dead by 4 o’clock. Chrissygently picked him up and put him in a box and drove him to her parent’s farm in Pennsylvania to be buried.
Chrissy is one of theheros of Riverdale Park. She gave Little Black Kitty food, shelter andbest of all Love. His last year with herand his last days with her were filled with all the love and care he had neverknown.
I salute Chrissy of Ravenswood for her compassion andefforts to help Little Black Kitty. Sheis one of the reasons Riverdale Park is such a great place to live. I am so grateful to have her as a neighbor and friend.
