Bates not picking up!
Im so frustrated with Bates.! They use to pick up my recycling every week. Then they stopped. I live on a major street in town with a lot of foot traffic.I dont like leaving it in the middle of the sidewalk for people to have to walk around it or step into the street. Recyling sits not even 1 foot from the sidewalk (maybe 1 extra step for Bates)I was leaving yesterday and saw the truck coming so I flaggsd them down and both the driver and man on tbe truck started yelling at me.They were saying they were there for yard waste. i told them they have not picked up for over 2 weeks and this happens all the time.. They went on to say i had to move it over to the sidewalk ...6 inches closer!!!
They picked it up same spot for over 15 years .Now last several years they dont pick it up and are very rude when I've told them they just have to take one more step!I explained again to them I dont like leaving it on the sidewalk. They yelled at me for 2 more mins and said another truck was coming around for the recycling. They never picked it up and it is still sitting in front of my house rain soaked because its over flowing.Could we as a town please look into other alternatives?

We have several seats left for this event on Racism and Food systems in PG
County, and need to sell a few more tickets by this Friday.

What - Food Deserts and Swamps: How Racism Makes it Hard for Some
Communities to Get Groceries
When - May 20, 2:30 -4pm

This event will be a panel discussion with Chloe Marshall of the Food
Justice Coalition 20743 and Margaret Morgan-Hubbard of ECO City Farms. Both
will provide context for understanding the way that systemic racism has led
to food inequities in Prince George's County and the DMV area. Why do some
communities lack access to fresh food while others have four or five
groceries stores? What does it mean to live in a food desert or a food
swamp? Come learn about the current situation in local communities and the
hard work of activists who are bringing fresh food into their neighborhoods
and returning ownership of food systems to communities of color.
About the Panelists:
Chloe Marshall is a food justice advocate, and one of the co-founders of
the Food Justice Coalition 20743. FJC 20743's mission is to bring fresh
food into the 20743 zipcode area, and restore ownership of the food systems
to marginalized communities. This summer Chloe and the other members are
opening the Oakcrest Farmer's Market, and their long-term goals are to
create a food co-op in Capital Heights. Find out more here:https://
www.foodjusticecoalition.com/who-we-are
Margaret Morgan-Hubbard is founder and CEO of ECO City Farms, which has
locations in Edmonston and Bladensburg. An environmentalist and educator,
she has a long history in social justice, and is invested in mentoring
young people and creating opportunities for collaboration between diverse
groups of people. ECO City Farms seeks to increase food security in the
Chesapeake Bay region, and improve nutrition and health outcomes, while
preserving cultural and ecological diversity. Learn more here: http://

Early Bird Tickets are $10 ($15 after 5/13), but no one will be turned away
for lack of funds. Childcare, transportation assistance, and other
accommodations are available upon request. Please contact

Hey All,
This is the second time I have scheduled a bulk trash pick up and had a no
show. Now I have a washer and a stove out by the street. That is where it
will stay until Bates decides to come and get it. My apologies for
creating an eye sore.
When I called they were rude and irritated that I was asking about it.
They finally passed me to someone named Brent Bates (son of Mr Bates) who
said he would get it by tomorrow. I hope the city can look into a new
contract this year. A 1.5 star rating on Google doesn't inspire
confidence, it's a wonder they still have contracts with anyone.
</end rant>

Yes, it would be good to know - does/has the town done an evaluation of the
Bates contract from the perspective of costs, quality of service, etc? What
do those evaluations report?
(Studies show that roughly 10-12% of municipalities that "outsource" the
provision of services to outside contractors decide later to "insource"
those same services, either because anticipated cost savings didn't
materialize, or the contract was too difficult to manage, or quality of
services did not meet expectations).

When I called they said they had no record of my request. Shortly after
calling someone picked it up. I'm glad it didn't sit around for another
week.
