I agree with Sarah about Uptown and the baker at the Farmers' Market.  We are picky about our bread.  In the 70s I did all of our baking for the family, but with just the two of us, we spend our time in other ways.  I may go back to baking when retired.  For good pastry we go to Georgetown to the Patisserie Poupon--the owner was born and raised in University Park by the way.  Nina

I find that there are relatively few bakeries that do both sweet
things and crusty breads well (our baker at the Farmer's Market in the
summer is a notable exception, as is Uptown Bakers.)
